Kate’s YStory - A Y For All
My name is Kate Henninger. When I started at the YMCA of Sequim, I had already been working in this facility when it was SARC. In 2016 I was planning to go away to college, but the week before move-in I realized that college didn't seem the right fit for me, so when the YMCA of Sequim opened, I was one of the first lifeguards and swim instructor. I'm so glad that I did because what started as a high school job has turned into a career. Over the last 7 years, I have been promoted to several different roles; Swim Lesson Coordinator, Aquatics Director and I was recently promoted to Senior Program Manager.
My career here has given me the opportunity to expand my horizons and try new things in ways I hadn't anticipated. For example, I was able to spread my wings and move to California for a few years and work as the Associate Aquatics Director at the Peninsula Family YMCA in San Mateo, before returning to Sequim.
Many people don't realize what a supportive work community we have at the Y. We have a culture of inclusivity, warmth and support. Interacting with members and our warm work environment makes it a pleasure to come to work, but being able to help others and have an impact on our community's youth is what is most gratifying to me. Through the skill-building I've done as an employee here, I've gained a lot of self-esteem that I didn't have when I was younger. I've learned a lot about myself, like how much I enjoy managing people, plus, I've grown in my confidence with social interactions and speaking in front of crowds.
If you're looking for a supportive work environment where you can make a difference, consider joining our team at Olympic Peninsula YMCA because we're like a family (I know all businesses say that, but ours really is.) We look out for and support each other through work and personal life challenges, which is priceless.
